Marks Gate and Cycling: A Love Affair
It’s been an action packed Summer in Marks Gate and we’re delighted to say there’s a real buzz around cycling at the moment.
Every Friday morning we have seen over 20 young cyclists join our bike club on Tantony Green where children have learnt new skills and had fun along the way.
On top of the Friday club, we have been running a family-focused Learn to Ride session every Thursday afternoon where we have helped a number of young children take their first pedals without stabilisers, whilst parents received cycling tips of their own. This has been a fun and inclusive session which on occasion has welcomed three generations of cyclists!
This Summer we have:
- Delivered 32 active travel events.
- Engaged 25 children in the weekly Bike Club.
- Taught 12 young children to ride without stabilisers.
- Engaged 26 women who have attended the women’s club and bought their own bike.
- Ran 2 Dr Bike sessions in the community.
The women’s club is still meeting every Tuesday morning and we are now also running sessions on Thursday evenings to include women who are not free during the day. Part of the success of the women’s club stems from it being inclusive and flexible: people can learn at their own pace and achieve their own personal goals. We work with some women who are cycling for the very first time, whilst others have been supported to venture off on longer rides into the Countryside. We are particularly proud of Jeanette who, at the age of 70, is now riding around her neighbourhood, whether it’s to the shops or the GP, with a smile on her face.
‘As an older person I’m in a minority, but I don’t feel like an older person – they’re a lovely bunch of women and I’ve enjoyed making new friends and being active!’
