Have Your Say (and a free smoothie)!

Hello! I’m Sustrans’ new DIY Streets Officer in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. Here’s how to get involved…

Over the next year I will lead community engagement and co-design events so residents can have a say in the delivery of designs meant to regenerate Marks Gate, so it’s better for the people who live here. Construction will be complete by September 2016.

What is DIY Streets?
The aim of the project is to improve opportunities for walking and cycling, opening up underused public space, empowering local communities to make decisions that impact their neighbourhood, providing improved links to services, including local shops, public transport links, green space and wider opportunities for active travel. We also hope to create public art in the area, which we encourage local residents to contribute to.

I am inheriting the project from the wonderful Phillippa Banister. Marks Gate residents have so far benefited from her initiatives to run community clean-ups, paint the Subway and deliver community co-design.

Free Smoothies, Bike Marking and Maintenance
Please come and talk to me at pop-up events on 20th and 27th August on Rose Lanebetween 11am-2pm, where you can have your say on improving Marks Gate. On 27th August free bike marking, registration and maintenance will be available.

Co-Design Sessions
We will be holding community meetings on Tuesday October 6th 2015 between 6-9pm, as well as on Saturday 10th October between 2.30-5.30pm at Marks Gate Community Centre. A crèche and refreshments will be provided and we hope everyone will make an effort to come and share their ideas.

If you would like to be involved in the project, please get in touch. Next week Marks Gate residents will receive a letter and survey in the post. We would appreciate it if you could complete your survey and pop it in the box provided at Marks Gate Community Centre. If you don’t receive this please get in touch and I will ensure another is sent out. I am happy to meet with you in Marks Gate to discuss problem areas and ideas for improvement.
